Beat the Heat in the Lowcountry this Summer with these Sweet Treats from Our Favorite Local Ice Cream Shops!

Nothing says summertime in the Lowcountry like enjoying a sweet, cold tasty treat at your favorite local ice cream shop!  Whether you’re indulging after a dinner at home, or capping off an adventurous day at the beach, you won’t be disappointed by calling one of these locally-owned staples your go-to!  Here are some of our all-time favorites:

Bearcat’s Sweet Shop – Sullivan’s Island

If you’re looking for a twist on your typical ice cream of choice, try getting your favorite flavor in an ice cream sandwich at Bearcats!  Also known for their gelato sundaes, the menu is full of old-fashioned favorites with a perfect touch of something new.  If you’re hungry while visiting, they also serve plenty of breakfast and sandwich items as well!

Coligny Ice Cream Cone – Hilton Head

The Ice Cream Cone in Coligny Plaza has been a local favorite for 50 impressive years!  With an ideal location, just a couple of steps from the beach, guests can enjoy a perfect afternoon snack on a hot, Hilton Head afternoon.  Regardless of what you choose from the selection of ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes, frozen yogurts, etc., you can’t go wrong!

Common Ground Coffeehouse and Market Cafe – Beaufort

A hidden gem that resides along the Waterfront!  While the coffee shop itself serves traditional food and beverages, along with Lowcountry staples such as gumbo, the gelato selection is what it’s known for.  If the kids are hoping for a sweet treat after a long summer day, mom and dad can also indulge in the beer and wine list!

Frozen Moo – Hilton Head

Another local gem located in Coligny Plaza!  You can look forward to ordering just about anything your wildest dreams can imagine, with over 90 flavors of ice cream, frozen yogurt and sherbet!  Once you’ve chosen your flavor, you can add on your choice of an abundance of toppings, many of which are locally sourced.

Hilton Head Ice Cream – Hilton Head

Hilton Head Ice Cream has been the island’s worst kept secret, and a local favorite, for almost 40 years!  They make all of their ice cream flavors in-house and will even make you something seasonal (even off-season flavors!), for special order, if you call ahead!

Southern Sweets – Beaufort

Not only has Southern Sweets been named the best ice cream shop in the state, but they are also dog friendly, making it the perfect ice cream stop for literally everyone in the family!  A local favorite for the past 20 years, you’ll instantly feel as if you’ve stepped into the past when you walk into their old-fashioned ice cream parlor.

Stellar Ice Cream – Lady’s Island

The newest local shop on the list but certainly not the slowest.  Stellar has been deservedly busy since the moment they opened their doors.  Just moments from the beach, on Lady’s Island, they pride themselves on their over 30 different varieties of, handmade, small-batch ice cream flavors.

Ye Ole Fashioned – Various locations throughout the Lowcountry

A true old-fashioned ice cream shop, complete with hot dogs, hamburgers, and diner-style sandwiches.   Ye Ole Fashioned has been a Lowcountry staple and expanding, since 1972 and the ice cream portions have remained more than generous ever since!  If you’re in the mood for a sandwich when you’re visiting, make sure to try their famous BLT – complete with 10 pieces of bacon!

YoYo's Ice Cream – Beaufort

With two locations in Beaufort, you simply can’t go wrong.  What started as a self-serve frozen yogurt shop has expanded into another ice cream shop, which serves as a perfect place to take the kids after a day at the park!  With a little bit of everything from ice cream, frozen yogurt, Italian ice, popcorn, and more, they have certainly made a fast name for themselves in Beaufort!

While the summer heat has been in full force, even more so than past years, there really isn’t anything like cooling down with homemade, local, ice cream.  It’s just another reason to feel so thankful to live in the Lowcountry!
