There are so many wonderful aspects of fall in the Lowcountry that we often lose track of where to start!  However, one aspect that remains obvious is the abundance of trails that offer unique views of the wildlife and forestry that are native to our proud communities.  Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly day or a strenuous adventure, these trails will offer the best that that Lowcountry has to offer with the fall views that simply can’t be beaten!

Beaufort County

·        The Spanish Moss Trail – The Spanish Moss Trail is often considered to be the best in all of South Carolina and it’s no wonder why!  This one-of-a-kind trail connects Beaufort with Port Royal and is an impressive 10 miles long.  Pet-friendly and boasting unique boardwalk views of the astounding wildlife both in the water and on land, if you’re looking for just one trail to experience this fall, look no further than the Spanish Moss Trail. 

·        Hilton Head Audubon Newhall Preserve – This 50-acre preserve is free to the public anytime from dawn until dusk.  There are multiple trails throughout the preserve that allow guests a casual walk while taking in the abundance of wildlife, trees, and plants native to the state.  Brochures are available at the entrance.

·        Coastal Discovery Museum – Enjoy a casual stroll around the Discovery Museum and enjoy one of two main trails.  The Camellia Garden exhibits over 120 varieties of native flora and fauna while the Sea Shell will take you directly to the infamous Jarvis Creek.  Each trail exhibits unique traits of the 68-acre oasis.     

·        Cypress Wetlands – A .6-mile trail that is both paved and includes a boardwalk.  This trail offers the best views and experiences along the cypress swamp.  

·        Crystal Lake Park – Walk the pristine trail around and through the lake, marsh, and forest.  Just across from Beaufort, the boardwalk along the Crystal Lake Park trail also boasts a stunning sunset!      

·        Hunting Island State Park – This park offers 12 different trails ranging from .2 – 2 miles along dunes, boardwalks, and lagoons.  Ranging from very easy to strenuous, there’s something for everyone!

Colleton County

·        The Historic ACE Trail – An ideal trail for hiking, biking, and bird watching.  Set on about 3 acres, the trail is made up of dirt and concrete.  In total, the trail is just shy of 3 miles. 

·        Ernest F. Hollings ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge – A wonderful opportunity to enjoy a casual hike while taking in the beauty of Lowcountry wildlife.  The trail itself wraps around the ACE Basin. 

·        Bear Island Wildlife Management Area – Open for the season until October 31^st.  Bear island provides scenic trails that are the perfect opportunity to admire the wildlife they are protecting such as wood storks and bald eagles.

·        Colleton State Park – A casual .3-mile trail that loops around incredible native trees and plants.  If you’re looking for more of an adventure, take the trail down to the dock and kayak along the Edisto river with various turtles, snakes, and other various wildlife. 

Jasper County

·        Blue Heron Nature Trail – This ½ mile trail is perfect for both exercise enthusiasts looking to make multiple laps or the casual observer who is more interested in the surrounding wildlife!  The trail is comprised of ¼ mile recycled rubber and ¼ mile boardwalk.  Enjoy taking in the flora and fauna native to jasper county as well as the wetlands that contribute to the identity of the Lowcountry. 

Charleston County

·        Botany Bay Plantation Wildlife Management Area – over 3,000 acres of undeveloped wetland ecosystems.  In fact, it’s one of the largest that remains along the Atlantic Coast.  Enjoy this gorgeous oasis by bike, horseback , or foot. 

·        Edisto Beach State Park – This park offers 7 different and diverse trails.  Ranging from .2 – 1.7 miles, there’s a trail for bikers and serious hikers, alike, to those who wish to enjoy the nature that surrounds them.  Regardless of which direction you choose, make sure to take in the incredible marine life and forests that the island offers.
