The new year is almost here, and many of us have been working on our ‘resolutions’ and ‘goals’ for 2022. After all, a new year is so exciting as it affords us so many opportunities to truly reach for the stars and go after those dreams and goals that may have escaped our grasp for too long. But how do we really set a goal? After quite a bit of research on this topic ourselves, we’ve come up with this:
You must be specific! What do you REALLY want to achieve? For an easy example- instead of saying “I want to lose weight” say…I want to lose 25 pounds. Then you’ll want to ask yourself- What does this involve, what am I really trying to accomplish, when and why do I want to make this happen?
Your goals NEED to be measurable. If you plan to pay off $36,000 in debt in a year, you’ll need to break it down into $3000 a month. Then even further into daily, weekly, and monthly steps to make that goal. Always focus on one task/step at a time. When you finish one, go on to the next.
Deadlines/ Finish lines must be established. A finish date or deadline is critical to your success. In order to successfully conquer your goal, you’ll need to create a plan. From there you’ll break that plan down into daily activities that help you meet your objective. If you wanted to lose 25 pounds in 6 months, you’d have to lose 4.17 pounds per month. You’d then have to figure out exactly what you need to do daily, both in activity and in nutrition to meet those goals monthly.
A goal must be YOURS and yours alone. In all honesty, we all know that chasing another person’s goal never works out. If you’re going to work hard to achieve anything, it has to be something you truly desire and are passionate about. You’re the one going into the ring to fight for it…so make sure it’s YOUR GOAL and worth the fight.
Always put your Goals in writing! Something special happens when you put pen to paper and write your goals in black in white. It’s a commitment ceremony of sorts and a first step in holding yourself accountable for what your future can hold. You’re truly in charge of your destiny. Take charge now.
Some food for thought when setting goals for the new year. These are 7 life areas where smart goal setting is always recommended:
- 1. Spiritual
- 2. Family
- 3. Fitness
- 4. Education
- 5. Career
- 6. Financial
- 7. Social
The last couple of years have thrown everyone a few speed bumps and curveballs along the way, and 2022 most likely has a few in store for us too, however, we are all more resilient than we think. Planning goes a long way in achieving our goals and securing our futures.
